HIV PrEP — Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a daily antiretroviral medicine that prevents HIV infection in HIV-negative individuals at recurring risk. When taken consistently, PrEP is over 99% effective. Dr. Monga assesses eligibility, prescribes, and monitors PrEP — with home delivery across India.
What is PrEP and Who Should Consider it?
PrEP is a preventive medicine taken by HIV-negative individuals who are at ongoing or recurring risk of HIV exposure. The most commonly used PrEP regimen — Tenofovir/Emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) — is taken once daily. When taken consistently, it provides over 99% protection against HIV infection through sexual or injection drug use exposure. An on-demand (event-driven) regimen is also available for specific scenarios — Dr. Monga will advise which is appropriate.
PrEP is appropriate for: HIV-negative individuals with multiple sexual partners, serodiscordant couples (one partner HIV-positive), people who inject drugs and share equipment, sex workers, and others at consistent recurring risk.
PrEP requires periodic monitoring — HIV testing every 3 months to confirm HIV-negative status, and kidney function tests to monitor for any tenofovir-related effects. Dr. Monga manages all of this monitoring remotely for patients across India.
