The Danger of Viral Misinformation
In the age of social media, particularly on platforms like WhatsApp in India, misinformation spreads faster than facts. False "cures" and outdated myths about HIV not only fuel stigma but can actively prevent people from seeking life-saving treatment.
Debunking the Top 10 Myths
- (1) HIV spreads by mosquitoes — FALSE. The virus cannot survive in a mosquito's body, and they do not inject blood from a previous meal.
- (2) Sharing food or water transmits HIV — FALSE. HIV is not transmitted through saliva, sweat, or tears. Sharing utensils is completely safe.
- (3) An HIV-positive person can't have children — FALSE. With PMTCT (Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission) protocols and viral suppression, PLHIV can have perfectly healthy, HIV-negative babies.
- (4) HIV = AIDS = Death — FALSE. Modern ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) stops the virus from replicating. A person living with HIV can have a normal life expectancy.
- (5) Only gay men get HIV — FALSE. HIV affects all demographics, genders, and sexual orientations. In India, a significant portion of transmission occurs in heterosexual relationships.
- (6) You can tell if someone has HIV by looking at them — FALSE. Many people show zero symptoms for years. The only way to know is to get tested.
- (7) HIV is cured if it becomes undetectable — CLARIFICATION. Undetectable means the virus is suppressed to levels where it cannot be transmitted (U=U), but it is not a "cure." Treatment must continue.
- (8) PEP always prevents HIV — CLARIFICATION. PEP is highly effective but must be started within 72 hours. It is an emergency measure, not a 100% guarantee.
- (9) HIV tests are never accurate — FALSE. Modern 4th generation tests are incredibly accurate when taken after the appropriate window period.
- (10) Marriage protects you from HIV — FALSE. Trust does not prevent viral transmission. Routine testing for both partners is the only protection.
Rejecting Fake Cures
Beware of WhatsApp forwards claiming Ayurvedic or homeopathic "cures" for HIV. There is currently no cure for HIV, and abandoning ART for alternative medicines leads to dangerous viral rebound and immune system failure.
