The Critical 72-Hour Window
To prevent HIV infection, a treatment called PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) must be started within 72 hours of the assault. PEP consists of daily medication taken for 28 days. When started within the 72-hour window, it is highly effective at stopping the virus from establishing an infection.
Ideally, this medication should be started as soon as possible—within the first few hours is best.
