Surviving the Waiting Game
Completing your 28-day PEP course is a massive relief, but it is only the first step. You cannot take an HIV test the day you finish PEP and assume you are clear. The medication suppresses the virus, meaning a test taken too early might yield a false negative.
The Strict Testing Timeline
- Day 0 (Baseline): HIV 4th gen test before starting PEP.
- Day 1 to 28: Complete the full 28-day course of medication without missing doses.
- Week 4 (Day 28): Take an HIV 4th gen Ag/Ab test immediately after finishing the course. If PEP failed, most seroconversions will be detected here.
- Week 6 (Day 45): Take an HIV antibody test. At this stage, results are over 95% accurate.
- Week 12 (Day 90): The definitive, conclusive HIV antibody test. According to CDC and WHO guidelines, a negative result at 90 days means you are officially HIV-free.
Monitoring Organ Function
If your regimen included TDF, your doctor will likely request a follow-up kidney function test (Creatinine). For those who are Hepatitis B positive, careful liver monitoring is required upon ceasing the medication.
Dr. Monga provides continuous emotional and medical support throughout this 90-day window via remote follow-up consultations.
