Understanding HIV Risk Without Stigma

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a demographic historically and disproportionately affected by HIV. However, it is crucial to approach this topic not from a place of fear or stigma, but from empowerment through knowledge. Understanding the specific risk factors allows you to make informed decisions about your sexual health.

Why is the Risk Higher?

The increased risk is largely biological rather than behavioral. Receptive anal intercourse carries the highest risk of sexual transmission of HIV. The lining of the rectum is thin and delicate, making it easier for the virus to enter the body during intercourse compared to vaginal sex. Both insertive and receptive partners are at risk, though the risk is significantly higher for the receptive partner.

Proactive Protection: PrEP and PEP

Today, we have highly effective medical tools to prevent HIV transmission:

• PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis): A daily medication taken by HIV-negative individuals that reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%. It is highly recommended for individuals with multiple partners or those in serodiscordant relationships.
• PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis): An emergency medicine taken within 72 hours after a potential exposure (such as a broken condom) to prevent HIV infection.
• Condoms: Still highly effective when used correctly and consistently.
• U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable): If an HIV-positive partner is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load, they cannot transmit the virus sexually.
